Review of American River: Tributaries
American River: Tributaries, is a historical fiction novel written by Mallory M. O’Connor. I found the book a delightful book to read, it portrays the histories and lives of three immigrant families and their descendants between the years 1849 and 1963. The book is well researched and provides an interesting map which whets one’s appetite to visit California which is the setting for this amazing chronicle.
The histories of the three immigrant families unfold gently, imparting empathy, admiration and interest in the reader for the predecessors of the characters in the book. The frequent theme of love and forgiveness which is apparent in Mallory M. O’Connor’s beautiful writing style adds to the fascination of the novel.
Owen McPhalan is hard on himself and on those around him and because of this he drives his family away from the magnificent family homestead. Marian, his wife and mother to Kate, Julian and Alex can be admired who dares to pursue her dreams while living in a male dominated time and community and sacrificing much in the process. Later on, Marian is expected to deal with a very unusual and unexpected situation and she handles it with aplomb which proves her unselfish love for her daughter.
Kate is a strong and loyal daughter and sister who gives her love unconditionally and finds herself entangled in a forbidden but poignant first love and it is partly this love which helps to shape her non-judgmental and compassionate character which helps her to be kind and humane with Tommy at the end.
The humble and hardworking Ashida family relives heart ache, this time when their beloved first born Tommy gets hurt as Owen McPhalan considers him inferior for his daughter. Tommy, though has the fortitude to come to terms with the hurt but he will never be the same man again.
Julian finally finds love but best of all with the love comes acceptance which he had thought never to find.
Alex, the beautiful and talented youngest daughter finds she has what it takes to overcome a serious prejudice to help her sister find love and joy.
When I chose the book for review I expected more historical detail but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the history was beautifully woven into the story line and it was not tedious at all to read. The book portrays love, betrayal, hurt and ambition and it’s relayed in a way to which modern and not so modern readers can relate.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading American River: Tributaries but there are profanities throughout the book and a few detailed sexual encounters and therefore I recommend this captivating book to a mature audience.
The book seems to be professionally edited as it contains only one spelling error and there is only one sentence which doesn’t make sense.
It’s a wonderfully descriptive family saga and Mallory M. O’Connor writes superbly.
I rate this book four out of four stars.
