Leotychides, silver haired blue eyed boy, born in a royal family is sent by his father the king to be raised in the flock against his mother the queens wishes. At the tender age of seven he learns what hunger is with only a cloak and tunic as protection. He makes friends and climbs the ranks learning fighting skills that set this Spartan warrior above the rest. Being a Spartan and being poor is considered an honor. But being the bastard son of a king is a secret he guards with his life. The obsession he developed to know his blood father festers within him until her learns to keep that hidden.

Leothychides understand that not only is he the one hiding a fox, but there are many others doing the very same. Doing everything to hide their true selves.
Follow the life of this very brave young man as he grows to become a warrior involved with politics and the dangerous play of words, words that can maim and kill. Will this warrior prince find the meaning of what he is looking for or will the fox he so closely guards devour him in the end.

Author M.N.J. Butler tells a riveting tale in The Fox of battle fought with passion intermingled with historical facts. The story begins with Leotychides narrating his life for us the reader, writing it down although only for himself, the scrolls to be destroyed at his death. His vivid explanation of royal court life, the dance between secrecy and allies, of true love and hate makes for a excellent read.

The Fox is one of those well written exceptional historical novels that will take you back to a time so many of us hardly knows anything about. The characters is well developed lively, a creation of passion. M.N.J.Butler creatively describes the world of the Spartan with beautifully crafted words. The detail is exceptional and the reader will feel he is part of the Olympia seeing the statues of Apollo and Artemis, divine brother and sister with doves at their feet and so many more. At the end I felt such heart break for Leothychides, I truly feel that this book although not something I would normally read was definitely a well told tale that will stay with me long after I have put the book down.

The Fox appeared to be professionally edited; I only encountered minimal errors. The killing scenes described is not suited for young readers so my recommendation will be for a more mature audience.

Readers that enjoy historical novels will adore The Fox. Therefore I am proud to award this book with 4 out of 4 stars. Well done to M.N.J.Butler.
