Review of The Pro-Achievement Principle
The Pro-Achievement Principle by Dr Deborah S. Bright is the gateway to inculcate in people the knowledge of personal skills that can be effectively utilised in not only businesses or teams, but also everyday life. It is an enlightening, quick read marketed as a ‘BIZLET’, referring to a book that can be read in the time duration of a flight from New York to Chicago. For a short book like this, it might seem hard to believe that it offers a viable solution to encourage employees to exceed expectations, but rest assured - it does just that.
It is structured in the form of seven lessons, each one covering different topics. In these lessons, we are introduced to the concepts of ‘personal responsibleness’ and ‘achieving attitude’, which form the pillars of the Pro-Achievement Principle, along with several other terms. The author offers succinct explanations for each of her points, which allow us to gain a clear understanding of what she is trying to convey. Moreover, the chapters - or rather, the lessons - are interspersed with studies and surveys. This provides the factual basis and establishes the need to implement the solutions offered by Deborah. The lessons are concluded with ‘Takeaway Points’, a thoughtful gesture for when the reader wants to go over the points mentions in a summarised form.
There are many positive aspects of this book. Deborah has made use of examples to put forth and emphasise her point wonderfully. She has offered scenarios that can be used to introduce the concept of Pro-Achievement to team members. The lessons - particularly Lesson 2 and Lesson 5 - include sample written tests, self-analysis worksheets, sample points grader for interviews and more. This introduces a certain hands-on appeal, and we can see Deborah’s dedication in making sure that the reader gets the most out of the book. The book culminates with a real-life example of how a manager introduced and encouraged her employees to follow the Pro-Achievement Principle. This emboldens other leaders to do the same.
In all honesty, I cannot fault anything about this book. It has been wonderfully edited and explained, and it achieves everything it sets out to do. I would recommend this book not only for people who occupy leadership positions currently, but also people who are applying for leadership positions, who aspire to be a better team member, people looking for jobs, as well as just about anyone looking to improve their attitude.
I give The Pro-Achievement Principle a solid 4 out of 4 stars. This wonderful book can be considered a Pro-Achiever itself, exceeding expectations and leaving us with lessons to think about and imbue in our lives.
