Review of Snow Country Lane
Snow Country Lane by Sarah Vail is a crime thriller novel that revolves around Tim McAndrews, a Washington prosecutor. Second in a series of novels by Sarah Vail, Snow Country Lane can also be read as a standalone.
Due to a self-defense shooting, Tim McAndrews was suspended from work and was faced with a major career decision; whether to continue working as a prosecutor, to join the FBI, or to go the corporate route. Daniela St. Clair, his recently wedded wife, decided to take him and his friends on a vacation to help him clear his mind. She didn’t anticipate Beebe Knoll, a news reporter, hell-bent on getting the next biggest scoop and secretly in love with McAndrews, crashing the vacation. Amidst what already felt like a ruined trip, an attempted abduction took place in front of them, resulting in an intense snowmobile chase. The little girl was rescued by McAndrews but this incident catapulted them into something darker and more sinister than they’d ever imagined. With the help of his friends and colleagues - Scott Renton, a Seattle detective; Kathy Hope, a medical examiner; Elias Cain, a genius FBI profiler; and Miguel Gonzales, a covert FBI agent - Tim McAndrews went on a hunt, risking his life, to uncover the villainous deeds of a possible child trafficking ring.
From the very first chapter, Vail drew you in and kept you hooked with her descriptive and fast-paced writing. With interesting three-dimensional characters, she took you on a journey of not just solving a mystery and catching the bad guys but also kept you invested in the dynamic relationships and importance of each and every character mentioned in the novel. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the novel contained different points of view as it added layers to each character, especially to that of the kidnapper, Sam Graden.
There’s nothing in particular that I disliked about the book. It was an enjoyable and hard-to-put-down read. However, the book did touch upon certain dark topics like child abuse, child trafficking, satanism and murder. Despite its description not being too graphic, readers who are sensitive to these topics as well as children might want to avoid this novel.
I rate this novel four out of four stars. I only found a couple of minor errors and can therefore conclude that the novel was professionally edited. The pacing was also perfect for its genre. The novel didn’t lose even a single star as I couldn’t really find any obvious negative aspects to it.
I recommend this novel to mature readers as there is a bit of profanity involved as well as non-graphic sexual content. Those who enjoy fast-paced crime thrillers with romance thrown into the mix will definitely appreciate this novel.
