Ark of the Apocalypse is a glimpse of our future. The story of the planet we have exploited. The book is a well-tuned yet a bit dysfunctional time machine. It takes you back to the past then dumps you back into the present. Only the present isn't our present, but a dystopian future that seems quite realistic. Despite the sci-fi nature of the book, it has also captured the very essence of world politics. It depicts the fluctuation of the world government and how quickly an enemy can turn into an ally. And the ally can do an about-face and take down your country.

Politics and government aren't topics that usually interest me, but Tobin Marks turned them into a tale too riveting to overlook. The Yanbeyev family is as horrific as it is powerful. And no matter how little time each character got in the book, I mourned the death of every character. And it's a book worth a re-read. Tobin Marks has done a great job with the first book, and I am looking forward to the next one.

The book was cut too short. It felt as if the story ended just as it was beginning, maybe because it is the first book in the series. I often felt rushed. I couldn't be in the moment and enjoy a scene. The transitions, the flashbacks and glimpses of the future came very suddenly and were gone too soon. It didn't give me much time to understand what made the characters tick or form a clear picture of them in my mind.

I'm rating this book a well deserved four out of four stars. I found no errors in the books, and it is especially well-edited. In addition, the book took me on a journey throughout the world. I saw parts of Russia that I might never get to see. I saw oceans shrink and countries catch fire. I felt like a voyeur or a historian recording the sad tale of our planet. But I must say, the book was as thought-provoking as it was entertaining.

Readers who enjoyed Game of Thrones and gobble up sci-fi books should give it a try. For some reason, the new planet reminds me of the 1985 Animated children's cartoon Thunder Cats. It could be the reptiles. People who enjoy reading paranormal novels, supernatural novels, urban fantasies, and dystopian novels will have a marvelous time reading Ark of the Apocalypse.
