Review of How To Be Successful
How to be successful: Think like A Leader written by M. Curtis McCoy is a book on how to change your mindset which will make you become successful. It also makes you question what you perceive to be success. In the book there is different interviews done with highly respected and well-known successful business owner’s, CEO’s, family men and women and a Priest on how they became successful, and in their minds, what is success.
I have enjoyed reading the book especially the interview with Connie Wyatt the Chief marketing Manager of a successful company and the mother of M. Curtis McCoy. It is very clear the values she has installed within her family and which in return reflects in the determination of her son and how she would go to the ends of the earth to help her son overcome his illness physically and mentally. The book is not a step-by-step guide how to change your life it is more titbits of information from wonderful people and how they became successful themselves in their personal lives as well as in the social standing and corporate standing. Take a pen and paper or highlight the phrases what appeals to you, by just reading the book and already implementing some changes in my mind and how I approach people, I have already seen some progress.
In the beginning the book can be a difficult to read with the elevated word use making it a slow read. It does broaden your vocabulary once you take out a dictionary and start searching the meaning of the high-level words used to be able to grasp the context of what is being told. At some point it starts to feel that there is no purpose to the book and then just as I was about to give up on reading it, the purpose of the book came to light.
I give the book 3 out of 4 stars rating although the book is very well edited and there is no mistakes and no errors that can be found. The book could be better structured, the answers in the interviews feel repetitive, the book goes on to the next interview without concluding the previous interview, it left me confused at the end of each chapter due to things left unwritten in the interviews.
Recommended for anybody that wants to make a change in their life. It appeals to any age and any gender because it is never too late to improve your life. Within the different perspectives of the different interviewees they give additional books, scriptures to read which impacted their lives and the way they approach challenges and family. The overall message that is being portrayed is, if you want to be successful it first starts with how a person treats their own family and friends, only once a person is successful in those aspects of life further success will be everlasting and not just a fly by night.
