The Fox by M.N.J Butler is a historical fiction book that shows life in the Spartan era. The book has military aspects that make it hard for a reader to enjoy the book if they are not a fan of wars and military themes.

The story is centered around the life of Prince Leotychides. He was supposed to be the new ruler of Sparta after the king passed away. On the king’s deathbed, he regarded Leotychides as the rightful heir to the throne. The prince grew up suffering and endured a lot to establish his roots. He worked hard and tried his best to make something of himself. It was rumored that he was not King Agis’s true son. This rumor was spread mostly by his Uncle who was power hungry and was challenging him to the throne. He wanted the Prince’s claim to the throne to be invalidated as he told everyone that the prince was an illegitimate child. After King Agis died, it was under Spartan law that the prince should take the throne. With his uncle challenging him for the throne, will prince Leotychides prevail? What lengths did he have to go to to take his rightful position? Reading the book will answer these questions. The politics involved is also worth reading as I found it intriguing.

What I immediately loved upon starting to read this book were the references to words and mythology that the author put at the beginning of the book. These helped a lot with words I was unfamiliar with and the history I needed to know to read the book with ease and devoid of confusion. These references took a lot of time off the internet I would have spent trying to figure out some meanings. The author manages to put a lot of life lessons in this book. I appreciated how I learned to never give up and always pick myself up after a fall. This lesson was enforced throughout the book.

The book also offers a lot of knowledge and insights into historical Sparta. This knowledge is something I would not have found elsewhere presented compellingly and engagingly. The story was well organized and the author put a lot of detail that was enough for me to paint a mental picture of the scenarios and environment. This increased my level of engagement and interest in the book. I loved how the cover page tells part of the story on its own. It is sure to grab anyone’s attention and leaves no doubt as to what the book is about. The narration style the author used what phenomenal. He used different styles but I mostly liked the interactive style which kept me captivated.

The only thing I disliked about the book is that there were too many names to remember. I had to go back a couple of pages sometimes to remember what was being talked about. It took me a while to grasp where the story was coming from and where it was going. This made it hard to enjoy the book at first. Once I understood what was happening, everything came together perfectly and I fully enjoyed the story. My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. This is due to impeccable editing and an abundance of things I liked about the book. It was clear that M.N.J Butler put a lot of research and planning into this book and I found that impressive.

I recommend this read to historic fiction fans. Fans of war and military themes are likely to appreciate this book. I just have to warn all interested readers that this book is a bit lengthy and therefore will require some level of commitment to reading it through. I can guarantee that the audience that finds this kind of book appealing will not be disappointed.

I must say, I kept seeing this book but was not keen to read it because I did that thing we were all told not to (judge a book by its cover, haha). After reading your detailed review, I am regretting not picking the book sooner. I enjoy things about politics and enjoy uplifting books that you can relate to the modern times. So I will give this book a go! Thank you.
