Review of Earthships, book 2
Earthships Book 2 Earth's Blue Sky; Will Our Children Remember? by Bonnie Jane Hall is a follow up book to Earthships Book 1. Following along with Laurel and those she cares most about in a world affected by climate crisis you will get a feel for just how hard life can be when humans have not taken proper care of the earth. Life for them has become extremely dangerous and unpredictable but they continue to press on and try to help others, protect themselves, and also try to enjoy the good things that can still be available to them in life. Day to day life must go on with characters seeking out education, falling in love, starting families all while fighting constant tragedies brought on by ocean levels rising, wars, gangs, terrorists, high immigration, and a deadly virus.
I enjoyed getting to know Laurel and her family and found myself rooting for them through some really terrifying situations. The difficulties of taking care of each other in such desperate times was made obvious in the steps they had to take in order to add protective measures to their lives and to their homes. They lived in Earthships which were underground homes with all the amenities that would be needed to survive in a world filled with turmoil. Laurel knew how to design these homes so they constructed some for themselves as well as for others whom they were able to build for. You really got a strong sense of family in the story and of sticking together since they had to do just that in order to survive. There were some emotional moments when things got tough due to invasions, catastrophes, or illnesses and you got to experience the moments when they would have to sometimes turn off emotionally in order to survive as mentioned by Laurel when she said; "I feel I am growing numb to the loss of life... This scares me."
I felt slightly bothered by the fact that the characters got to enjoy so much while the world outside was struggling so badly. They enjoyed weddings, births, many indulgent meals, shopping for things that many would never be able to enjoy during such times but in all reality that is the what they worked so hard to achieve for themselves, a good life. The story started out rather slowly as you met all the characters but after awhile it finally picked up and there were some real tense moments that had me on the edge of my seat.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I loved the characters and found it very interesting to follow along with them during such difficult times but I did find the story at times was a bit slow and the characters sometimes lacked a full range of emotions you would see compared to the situations they were in.
If you are interested in post apocalyptic or dystopian books you might enjoy experiencing how Laurel and her family coped with and were able to survive and sometimes thrive in a world that seems to be falling apart.
