Lauren Powers, who is a ten-time heavyweight bodybuilding champion, and so much more, gives readers a vivid insight into her life and a lot of advice in her memoir, Beneath the Muscle: Unleash Your Inner Champion. There is an abundance of life lessons from the beginning of the book till the very end. I was laughing right from the Foreword and knew I would love this book. It reveals a lot; for instance, she graduated with a solid 4.0-grade point average even though she didn’t spend a day in an actual classroom during her senior year, and she was on tour.

She finds a balance between encouraging us to allow ourselves to feel because she knows there will be down times when we want to remain in bed and throw a 'pity party' and urging us not to dwell there for too long, challenging us to get up and keep going. She constantly implores us to experience life and not allow our fears and doubts to stop us.

I found Beneath the Muscle: Unleash Your Inner Champion very insightful and inspiring. I learned so much, and the experience was even more fulfilling as I used the workbook for clarity, development, and a more potent effect. I strongly recommend readers use the workbook while reading for a thought-provoking experience, even though this isn’t compulsory and you can enjoy the book without it. It is difficult not to like and admire Lauren Powers after reading this book. She is full of so much fostering, understanding, and advice. Even though I may not agree with every single thing she wrote, I certainly can’t deny that there’s a lot to learn from her. She is a high achiever who has been through a lot but doesn’t let disaster stop her from moving forward and helping people. She is deserving of salute, yet, she remains so down to earth.

I have no negative aspects of this book to report. The writing style is easy to understand, uplifting, relatable, and engaging. Her tone is non-judgmental, understanding, and encouraging, making it feel personal and like you have a friend cheering you on. She also paints very graphic images, which help drive across her points, for instance, likening herself to "a warrior with a big machete, blazing trails for others to follow.” Not only does she employ graphic descriptions, but there are actual images for you to admire as you read. Each chapter is correctly headed and starts with a motivational quote, so you have an idea of what it’s about before you start. The spacing of the chapters and paragraphs is adequate, which gives it an appealing look. I noticed that the pages weren’t consecutively formatted, but this is a minor issue, one that is easy to overlook. Aside from this, I saw no errors. So, I gladly rate this splendidly written book 4 out of 4 stars.

You don’t have to be a bodybuilder or be interested in bodybuilding to enjoy this book. There’s something for everyone. Whether you’re simply looking for some encouragement, self-improvement, clarity, or you're an alcoholic, scared to publish that book, you’ve been discriminated against or unfairly accused, or you’re depressed and need some motivation, this book has something for you. I recommend this book to everyone.
