Review of Ark of the Apocalypse
To know how the inevitable fate of humanity plays out, or to understand your role in the destruction of human civilization with all the sacrifice and death you will be directly responsible for, which is the greater curse? The Yanbeyev family is burdened with both and has the added role of executing the reconstruction of mankind over thousands of years and hundreds of generations. Anything and everything can go wrong as the immense task weighs on the family matriarchs but, do they have the tenacity to carry mankind to the stars and beyond?
The fact that Tobin Marks spans millennia in his novel Ark of the Apocalypse makes the novel feel rushed. At the start you are pinging between the past, present, and future, and often find yourself lost within the different centuries. It doesn't just get your pulse racing and your heart beating but your mind is constantly shifting through different realities at a dizzying pace. However, after the first few chapters, the timeline is streamlined and flows in one direction which makes the plot easier to follow but no less exciting.
What I like about Ark of the Apocalypse is that it seamlessly combines two of my favorite things, magic, and science. I thoroughly enjoy reading a novel that explains everything in a way that seems 95% realistic but there is always that 5% in which the impossible becomes possible. After all, out-of-this-world scenarios seem more real when touched with a bit of magic.
Another aspect that I like about this novel is the intense battles of mind-boggling proportions. I do not jest when I say that I got goosebumps from staring at a bunch of words on a piece of paper. Using vivid descriptions Tobin Marks shows all the hallmarks of a great author in Ark of the Apocalypse. Lastly, Tobin Marks' depiction of the end of the world, though exaggerated in some instances, is a threat all too real for today's world. With a realistic outlook on the destruction of the earth, one can't help but wonder if this is destined to be our fate.
Well edited with an exhilarating plot and an exquisite combination of magic and science, I rate this novel 4 out of 4. As I approached the end, it slowly dawned on me that the novel would have a sequel. My initial feeling was that Tobin Marks was flying through millennia to fit everything in one book but the fact that this was not the case made the novel more satisfying to read.
If like me you enjoy science fiction with a hint of magic, I highly recommend this novel to you. Also for those who enjoy a good doomsday "2012" style novel, this is a good read. I look forward to reading the sequel.
