Review of Rise of the Savior
In Rise of the Savior , we follow Amanda, an eighteen-year-old girl who has no idea what to do with her life next. When she is injured in a car accident, she gets bitten by a dog, which causes her to unlock her Kundalini . Her six-year-old sister, Saira, who has her own Kundalini to deal with, shows her the ropes. Now, using her deity's powers as an acolyte of truth, she must save the world.
I loved the family dynamics. They played video games regularly as a family, that's so sweet. The parents are so supportive of their children, and I think that's really sweet. The language is really simple and easy to understand. Antoine Bonner's writing is really accessible. The story of the creation of the world is actually really cool. Shen and Akuma remind me of Ruin and Preservation from Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson, and that's cool. The action scenes are well done, and I had fun reading it. The animal companion aspect of it is fascinating. I love a good animal companion. They definitely add to the story.
I had quite a few issues with the book. "Everything you love will die, leaving you hurt, broken, and pitiful" Saira is a six-year-old. Six-year-olds don't talk like this. Even though she's said to be really smart, she can't feel or empathize at all. The main character, Amanda, is not a likeable main character. Long story short, she's annoying. When her kundalini is explaining things to her, she doesn't listen, insults her and walks out of the door. Even when her sister Saira starts to explain, she's still in denial and doesn't believe her at all. She's whiny at times and makes dumb decisions. The villain had a motive for his actions in the beginning, but slowly lost sight of the motive. I understand why the villain felt that way he did, but killing other children to save your own is wrong. He is the last person who should have done that. He is a parent too. Why doesn't he consider other parents? Her dad begins to laugh. “I doubt a coward could save me". I understand that the acolyte of Karma needed to knock some sense into the main character, but using her dead parents to criticize and guilt trip her is not the way to go about that. The middle portion of the book was quite slow and predictable. For me, it was boring at times. But then, around the 60% mark, the pace begins to pick up, and it becomes more interesting. I thought the book was predictable, but towards the 70% mark, a plot twist (that I never saw coming) happens. It was so shocking. The ending was a bit intriguing, but felt incomplete. I do hope this is a part of a series or the ending will be really unsatisfying.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars . The writing style was good, but ultimately this wasn't the book for me.
This book would be enjoyed by people who love manga/manhua (as the author recommends). There were a lot of action sequences, some parts of the book read like a tutorial before you play the actual game. It was a fast-paced book, and I think the young adult readers who love video games will enjoy this book way more than me.
