Review of The Fox
The Fox by M.N.J. Butler is a historical novel set in the fourth century B.C., while Sparta experiences a divide within its citizens as a result of prolonged war with Athens. This story revolves around Leotychides, the heir to the Spartan throne who was the subject of a lot of controversies. Agisilaos, Leotychides' cousin is also in competition to attain the throne. Surrounded by battle, the struggle and rivalry of Leotychides and Agisilaos to reach the throne of Sparta is fueled by strong emotions. The Fox is a story of love, hate, loyalty, betrayal and twists of fate that no one can foresee.
I absolutely loved reading The Fox by M.N.J. Butler. This story is narrated by Leotychides and brings to life an intricately woven world of Sparta and its brave soldiers. The narrator goes back and forwards to childhood memories and present life, giving the book a realistic feel into the life and thoughts of Leotychides. Moreover, this book forces the reader to reflect on their lives, and think about the philosophical topics mentioned in this book such as mortality, way of life, culture and the innocence of childhood. Numerous characters in this story are very well developed. Their facial features, expressions, body movements and dialogue help develop personalities, good and bad characteristics of all characters. The impeccable detailing adds to the overall feel of the story and the depth of the period this book is set in.
While reading The Fox by M.N.J. Butler, there was not a single time when I felt as if I did not like the book or I felt bored. Although there are many characters and the plot moves fast, it does not take away from the book or reduce its impact. In addition to that, while reading this novel, I did not find a single spelling or grammar error, as this book has been exceptionally well-edited.
I gave The Fox by M.N.J. Butler a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. This book brings a closer analysis of the Greek civilization, and is written with impressive research and includes a variety of characters that contrast each other. The Fox dives into the ruthlessness of the rivalry for thrones and shows the level of corruption within the powerful political ranks at the time. The story of this book is very unique and unlike anything I have read before, adding to the power of M.N.J. Butler's writing.
I would recommend this book to young adults ages fourteen and up. Although there are not many instances of profanities or mature content present in this novel, The Fox does have multiple characters and a complex plot that is written with great depth and research. This can make the storyline confusing or hard to follow for younger audiences. Therefore, I recommend this book to young adults ages fourteen and up who will be able to better appreciate this book and enjoy it more. The Fox by M.N.J. Butler will give readers a glimpse of the ancient Greek civilization and is guaranteed to keep them glued to their seats till the very end.
