As a planet, not much is being said about the impact of technological advances on the stability and sustainability of our environment. The truth is that the engineering profession has always been in a relevant position to contribute to the stability or instability of our environment. It is pertinent for the society of engineers and technologists to take a pause to think and determine if to continue practices as normal and whether we can afford to do so. They need to also consider if there are strategies for doing what they do in a way that is friendly to the ecosystem. This is the message contained in John T. Tanacredi’s non-fiction book, The Redesigned Earth.

The book brings to light, the interactions between humans and other organisms with their environment. It also captures the technological activities of mankind targeted towards development and better living, which has adverse effects on the earth’s ecological system such as ecological destruction, extinction of endangered species, loss of the natural habitat of some species, etc. John T. Tanacredi points out that some of these effects become obvious only after a long-term course. He referred to these variations on the earth’s ecology as a re-design on the earth.

This book is made up of eleven chapters. The first few chapters introduce the readers to basic scientific foci as it pertains to this subject. The first chapter talks about ecology and the principles of life while the succeeding chapters present a dissertation of biological diversity, ecotoxicology, genetic engineering, microbiology, marine and estuarine ecology, terrestrial ecology and limnological systems. Environment risk assessment and environmental law are also discussed in the book. The last chapter presents six case studies that further buttress the writer’s message.

The Redesigned Earth is a book that is birthed from series of ardent research and I found this very impressive. The writer presented facts from publications of many other noteworthy researchers. It is also very commendable, that the writer clearly presented many practical illustrations and case studies that explain the theoretical message in the book. He also used diagrams and charts and these make for a better understanding.

What I do not appreciate about the book is that I think the book is highly boring. While I understand that this is the format for writing these kinds of research works, I also think that the writer would have done a better job at making the content more conversational, interesting and less boring. Besides this, I appreciate every other thing about the book. It is well edited and somewhat easy to understand. For these, I give the book a rating of three out of four stars. I withhold one star because of the uninteresting nature of the book. I recommend it to people who appreciate sciences especially people that have an advanced level of education as they will be able to comprehend the text better.
