Broken Inn by A. W. Baldwin is a story complete with crime, thriller, and adventure that swallows you right in. The journey is set in the state of Utah where a journalist new to the area, Hailey, is searching for a story to publish. An old hotel, the Broken Inn, with all past renovations and attempts failed, is beginning to start again in hopes of becoming prosperous this time around. A curious Hailey and coworker Ash uncover secrets they were not meant to know and find themselves eluding danger with the guidance of a wise wanderer, Relic. From hiking all day, rock climbing with no gear, escaping security guards, and sleeping on the ground, this pack's adventure will leave you breathless, empowered, and on an adrenaline high.

The main character's from this story began to feel like my own friends, and I listened to what they said as if they were saying it to me. The advice and help Relic gives Hailey on a personal level helped me also to understand and transform some feelings I have felt lately. Relic is a very knowledgeable character that can aid in bettering all human's mindsets on life. The lesser characters were a beautiful addition to the flow of the course the main characters followed. They obtain a helpful dog friend and meet a generous soul. The only thing I would have changed was the lack of background on the character Ash. I loved how the characters grew together and became connected and I'm left with a feeling of a life-long friendship between them. I yearn to know a little bit more about the personal life of a couple of characters.

Baldwin is a very creative writer that gives familiar plots and ideas a more meaningful purpose and a new flair.

The book has a great writing style with vivid details of the treks, caves, canyons, and other outside features. Reading the segments of their hikes I often found myself out of breath. The relatability of the book was high, and the book was very well edited and easy to read. I have chosen to give the book four out of four stars.

While I wouldn't recommend this book to children due to the abundant profanity, I would suggest it to any adult who enjoys being transported out of this life and into another. I enjoyed reading this book and will share it with others. My biggest takeaway is my urge to plan a trip to Southern Utah soon.
