Marcel Nickler tells of his experience while participating in the Marathon des Sables in Running the Sahara. The Marathon des Sables is a 251km marathon race through the Moroccan Sahara desert. The Marathon de Sables was started in 1986 and has seen many participants over the years. It is a six-day ultramarathon race held annually in the Moroccan Sahara dessert. It is considered to be the toughest international ultramarathon race. Marcel takes you through his preparation for the race, the challenges he faces and what he does to overcome them. He also engages you on the various lessons he learns from running the Marathon de Sables, how one can make great accomplishments with discipline, positive thinking and the right energy.

The choice of words of Marcel is good. He uses fairly long sentences that are easy to read and comprehend. The vocabularies and expressions used are well thought about and effectively serve to enlighten the reader on the various subjects Marcel addresses. He writes Running the Sahara in a demandingly enthralling and engaging way.

Marcel Nicker explains that his interest in running was sparked when he heard about his friend's epic experience. The Marathon de Sables is not the first or the only race Marcel has participated in. He started running in his thirties and twenty years later he was still running. It is absolutely incredible to read about a fifty seven year old's experience in the Sahara desert, determined to beat all the odds ahead of him and finish the marathon race.

Running the Sahara is about more than just the Marathon de Sables or Marcel's passion for running. It is a book with a lot of motivation, lessons and wise words. Marcel puts a lot of effort in making the book lively. He mounts a certain amount of sensation and vigor in his words. You will feel his despair when things are not working out for him. You will feel his satisfaction when he makes small accomplishments. Marcel describes every minute from his preparation for the race to the moments when he is racing with urgency and keenness, making the reader feel like he or she is participating in the actual race.

The book gives a lot of details about anything that entails a marathon or ultramarathon race. I have never participated in a marathon race. I must say from Marcel's words, a marathon race sounds like a nice adventure, or to be precise the Marathon de Sables. If you love participating in marathon races or perhaps if you are planning to participate in one, Running the Sahara can be a good book to get you started with, not just on motivation, but the fine details of preparation. I like the way pictures of the Moroccan Sahara desert are aligned at the end of the book, they do more than just make the book beautiful. For someone who has never seen the whole activity of the Marathon de Sables, they come in handy.

I did not not find anything to dislike about Running the Sahara. I did not find any error in the book. It is exceptionally edited. I recommend the book to those who love participating in marathon races or are planning to, those who are after motivational books and generally those who love non fiction books. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
