Review of So Long Earth
If Earth is the only home that has been known to accommodate humans. What would happen if we couldn't live on Earth anymore? Where would we go? If we could leave Earth would we be able to find another planet like Earth? The book So Long Earth by Michael Bienenstock is a Science fiction book. It explores various topics like life on Earth, space, science and politics. Dr Thomas Burns is the protagonist, who is a scientific engineer that worked at Boeing. He is someone who deeply cares about the Earth and the impact that people have on it, as well as the impact that Earth has on the human race. He notices the environmental changes that start to take place all over the world. "Summers were becoming warmer, and winters were becoming colder." The global warming outcomes have taken a turn on Earth as we know it. This leads to Dr Burns coming up with the crazy mission of trying to leave Earth, and trying to find another home for the human race. "He'd been selective about which colleagues from Russia, Germany, Australia and America he involved in preparing the mission."
"Based on the environmental evidence and facts, the human race probably has 200 years- or less-to live." This quote demonstrates the positive aspect of the book which makes you think about things you wouldn't usually think about on a daily basis. One doesn't normally think about how they have impacted the environment on a daily basis. This book really challenged my thought process with regards to Earth and how it has been treated throughout the years.
The negative aspect of this book would have to be that there is a constant shift in the point of view, that is linked to different characters. This could lead to a bit of confusion and it can become a bit repetitive. Chapters one and two are written in Dr Burns' point of view. Chapter three shifts to Sam's point of view and then chapter four shifts back to Dr Burns' point of view. The book progresses in this way and the more certain characters are introduced, the more the book shifts to their point view.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, it had some grammar and punctuation error, which made certain areas hard to understand. It has an amazing story line that kept me going and reading chapter after chapter. I couldn't predict what was going to happen next and that kept me on my toes.
There is a lot of scientific terms and the events that take place throughout the book are very scientific based as well. The focus of the book is mostly on how to cope with global warming, as well as finding a new home for the human race. Therefore, I would recommend this book to science, space and action lovers.
