Review of How To Be Successful
How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader by M. Curtis McCoy is carefully designed to motivate, encourage and provide principles that can be applied to ensure great leadership quality, personality improvement and wealthy enterprising skills: a book that can also suitably serve as daily practice instructional material for individuals or group classes
There was a systematic outline of qualities, behaviour and life choices that were presented which engaged my thought process and challenged me for immediate self assessment and evaluation. I started on a checklist of these qualities as well as to identify those that did not check out on my list. McCoy went on to present some practical strategies and easy illustrations on how to establish entrepreneurial and leadership qualities that I did not yet possess but that are necessary for my progress and success.
Apart from the specific guide, an interview session with entrepreneurs drawn from various professional backgrounds gave a richer and broader perspective to the various aspects of assessing my progress and journey in life particularly the aspect of the interview that talked about giving advice to your 18-year- old self.
The respondents provided their own wealth of practical definition and experiences of success. Through their responses, I was able to identify certain recurring ethics of self discipline, goal setting, and commitment. Their responses laid further credence to some other running discourse and pivotal points in the book: handling difficult times, using opportunities, people management, personal attitude, friendship and self worth.
Apart from that, the book provided insight to other opportunities for further self development by naming some of the books which the interview respondents had read more than once. I carefully took note of them and has since started looking them up as follow up study materials.
McCoy demonstrated some of the suggested principles by his own personal experiences as a brain cancer survivor, living with type 1 diabetes since 27 months of age, building businesses at a young age, losing everything, identifying fairweather relationships, rebuilding a business from ground zero, establishing worthy friendships and handling growing success.
This book teaches the place of personal faith, ethics, values and family support system in providing needed and relevant assistance in your challenging times which often comes with the success journey package
No grammatical or spelling errors were observed; How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader was well edited, however abbreviations that were used were not explained, I had to keep checking for their full meaning which was distracting. For example "That's what BUD/S was for me"
Although the Principles presented in the book could be relatable to aspiring entrepreneurs and individuals who needs practical business and leadership success guide regardless of their faith but the overemphasis on the Christian faith appeared to be intentional as the tone of the book was tilted to sort of imply that one may have to practice the faith of the entrepreneurs who were interviewed for the expected result to somehow be possible. This is the reason I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. Apart from that, it is a self enriching book that I recommend to young aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs who will find the inspiration and teachings useful resource for starting well, staying focused, achieving success and remaining successful.
