The Decoys by Jeffery Mechling is a story of how an ordinary day of running errands turned deadly for Tim and Mary Ann Hall when they walked into what seemed like a robbery in progress. When it became obvious that this was no random robbery, they had to do whatever it takes to survive. While their line of work in law enforcement helped them navigate their life on the run, it certainly led to a few squabbles.

Can this peculiar couple trust their respective employers? Will their marriage withstand the tension of being on a hit list and constantly having to watch their backs? Will they make it through professional rivalry and attempts at their lives?

Tim and Mary Ann have to uncover the real reason someone is trying so hard to kill them while making sure the killers do not succeed.

Jeffery Mechling provides a glimpse into the relationship between different American law enforcement agencies while weaving a gripping account of love, relationships and betrayal.

The Decoys will have you wanting to keep reading to the end!

The storyline was interesting and well written. With seemingly serious characters like Tim and Mary Ann, one would not expect to chuckle throughout the book, yet this book was surprisingly amusing.

What I did not like about the book was the author’s tendency to be overly formal in his writing. For instance, this sentence “Yes, go ahead and lay out the Armani, Mary Ann. I will wear it on the plane” sounds like Tim is addressing his housekeeper and not his wife. Their relationship was close so the unaffectionate tone of these sentences sounded unnatural. Another example of this is the author’s use of the full word Condominium instead of Condo. With that being said, this doesn’t stop this book from being a good read.

I rate this book 3 out of 4. This rating is because of Jeffrey's above-mentioned penchant for formality. In addition, I have found some errors in this book even though they were too minimal to bother me since there were only 3 errors out of 340 pages. I can say this book was professionally edited.

This book will appeal to people who enjoy crime thrillers. Though there are some accounts of intimate moments between the main characters, there’s no descriptive sexual scenes. Which makes it enjoyable to all readers.
