The Price of Dreams (Review)
By Jerry A. Greenberg
Brief Summary
This book is about an artist John Dolan who’s very focused on his painting. He couldn’t think of anyone or anything when he is on his paintings. He meets a girl at the University of Texas in Austin, called Amy, with a free spirit and outgoing and loved her company. John didn’t love Amy but liked her personality and her outgoing charisma which took John out of his shell to meet the world. Amy saw that John is matured, talented and determined while she was a total opposite. Amy psychologically forced John into a relationship and marriage even though they were not in love. She starts feeling lonely and in need to mother someone after their first daughter Meredith went to college. Her best friend gives her a kitten called Lucy to help her fill the gap of loneliness. This gets worse when their last born Dave went to college and Amy adopts three more kitten. John tried to address the issue but Amy always waived her away by complaining about her loneliness since John is very committed on his paintings. Series of events took place and their home became a refugee/home of Cats and Amy was known as the Cat Lady. Eventually, after the incident of cats attacking John and John moving out of their house to his cottage, Amy died in an auto accident with twenty or so cats. Meredith and Dave gave John a pet (a dog) named Commander to fill the gap of loneliness. John and Commander had a good relationship and John was able to focus and love other things other than his painting. John moved on with his life and reacquainted with his old university girlfriend which he dated before Amy. Her name was Sharon, very levelheaded, independent, down to earth and very smart. She saw how John has changed for the better. They reacquainted and got married but allowed themselves to be partially independent.
I really enjoyed the book, it has great practical life lessons, very funny, emotional, encouraging and all good that you can think of.
First lesson, John didn’t have time for anyone except for his paintings ever since he was young, very talented and committed. He didn’t have time for relationships, partying or friends except for those he painted with at the University of Texas studio. John teaches us to not focus too much on talents, businesses, dreams and forget to communicate with other people, make friends, family and love. Second lesson, Amy, John’s wife. She didn’t love John, she psychologically forced him to love her and marry her because John was talented, determined and matured. Amy was the opposite of John, so she assumed John would took care of her. John loved Amy’s personality and company but didn’t loved her. Amy teaches us that we must be careful of loving people for some reasons other than love. There are so many lessons I can mention from this book, it can take the whole day.
This book teaches us art or painting, philosophy, parenting, communication skills, life, people’s personalities, animals, love, food, places and English language. I swear the list goes on and on.
I would really like to recommend this book to everyone who loves reading but there was a strong language involved which led me to give it 3 out of 4 stars. The Author should have tried to remove statements or words like ‘Dick, Bitch, Boobs, Anal, Wild ride, Horny as hell’ because it is not good for children.
The author was very excellent/successful at making me understand the whole story, it is not easily forgettable and I can relate my life to it. The order/series of events, the conversations, punctuation marks and descriptions and many more is perfect.
I didn’t see any spelling errors, instead I was impressed with the English language used. There was some other language used by ‘Olga, the masseuse’, it took me a minute to understand. I liked how the Author describe things like Places, Cats, People, Buildings and many more, he’s very talented.
