The Reel Sisters is a novel that has a group of women come together and unite around a rather unconventional past time for women, which is fishing. This pastime unites them to the extent that they are able to forget their differences in age, marital status and occupation. Rose is an older woman who is widowed. Maybe she has a secret to tell? There is Amanda, a woman of twenty-three who has several young children and her husband is away at war. Sophie is a single woman in her early forties who has not yet found the right partner. Will she find him now? Veronica is married with a family.

When a young woman appears naked, struggling in the water they are fishing in, their fishing day is interrupted. Who is this woman and what is doing there? Why is she naked? Will she join them and share their passion for fishing or has she another purpose? You will need to read the book to find out. The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is 389 pages in length and is written in the first person. Each chapter is the perspective of one of the women. The book is part of the other fiction genre.

What I enjoyed most about the book the overall feeling of love, acceptance and friendship throughout. It was nice that they were so different yet accepted each other. I felt that the writer was somehow challenging some social attitudes, since age grouping and gender stereotypes were not actually present amongst many of the characters. Sophie seems playful at times but like a tomboy, behaving in a masculine fashion at times. None of them seem to bother that they are different ages or have other differences. The writer helped us to identify with each of the characters. The fact that she uses each chapter to give a different perspective of each character helped with this and made the novel more lively. The book seemed to be well edited and I did not come across spelling or grammatical errors.

What was more negative about the book was the crude humour, references to body parts and going to use the bathroom at times. This somehow added to the feeling of masculinity amongst the characters, and I found it a bit off putting. Profanity is used in the book at times, which I didn't feel was needed.

I decided to rate the book 3 out of 4 stars due to the above.

It would suit readers of alternative fiction, people interested in fishing, and those who enjoy female led character books.

Younger readers, sensitive people and others who are put off by profanity as well as rather intense scenes that concern death and tragedy should know what to expect before reading the book.
