Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
[Following is a volunteer review of "Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide" by William H. Coles.]
Are you a writer? Are you an aspiring writer? Do you think your knowledge is limited when it comes to writing fictional stories? William H. Coles' Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide provides adequate answers to that.
William H. Coles is an award-winning author and editor. He has won the Flannery O' Connor Award for short fiction. This book is separated into two parts. The first part consists of 12 chapters, while the second part consists of only 5 chapters. In the first part, he talked about literary fictional stories, characters in a fictional story, narrations, dialogues, conflicts and how to create one in a dialogue, writing an in-scene and so on. The second part talked about the fundamentals of telling a literary story, essentials, providing for the readers and a story that comes to life.
Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide is a gem. A book worth sharing. I found it immensely rich with knowledge and insights. I have always been a fan of storytelling and I had no idea of starting the journey until I read this book. I loved how he used fictional examples to explain some concepts in his book. This was really appreciated because someone who has no prior experience in writing or storytelling will find this easy to understand.
I have always been a writer that fancy using a second-person's point of view to narrate my stories. But this book has been a revelation to me as I discovered that the second-person's point of view narrative did not have much impact on the readers. He emphasized that using a third-person's point of view narrative gave the reader a chance to understand every character's perspective in fiction. Each chapter was written in simple English and it was quite engaging. Every term was deliberately and separately explained.
I love how the author summarized each chapter at the end. Also, I understood the importance of each character in a story. The important characters should be introduced into the story as early as possible. He talked about how and when a writer should develop a character and when not to remove one.
Although there was nothing I disliked about this book, there were a few errors I found in the book. This will not affect my rating though as I will rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to future and aspiring writers.
