Lying in the busy city of Highfall was “The Duns”, which hosted the notorious and homeless members of the city. Among the homeless members was a young girl named Shrew. She lived by looting the food items from loose traders in the market. This vice made her a notorious delinquent among the dwellers of the Duns. On one unlucky raid, Shrew found herself in the hands of law enforcers who sent her to an orphanage.

What sounded like an orphanage for Shrew, later turned into a dungeon. On the way to the dungeon nicknamed as “orphanage” by her captors, Shrew finds herself with Wilf, the victim of the dungeon being returned after a failed attempt to escape. Shrew disguised herself as a boy which made her receive all the treatment that boys can receive. She again disguised herself as a member of the royal family, which prompted her captors to treat her with much care due to expectations for riches from her family.

Shrew found some loose ends which she then planned an unsuccessful escape. She was caught and then taken to “the matron” who realized that Shrew was a girl not a boy as his captors had been deceived to believe. She was taken to be used to remove debris from the water channel that had been blocking water movement thus causing the flood. This attempt gave her a chance to escape as she later discovered that the channel had another open ending that cast her into a pool of water. She maneuvered through the pool water to the bank allowing her to see a new life.

On her way back to her normal life, she landed in a secret room whence she lodged up to the next morning. In this secret room she found some food and other spoils which she used to her benefit. On the morrow, she made her way to her hideout which she found no longer fitting to provide her with a domicile. She then planned to migrate to another safer place perhaps in another district. On her way, she had a fatal encounter with other homeless kids. Using her dagger, she outsmarted the dangerous encounters she met.

I give this book 4 stars out of 4. This choice has been made by the connection I have found in the characters and the attraction, sympathy and affection I have developed towards Shrew. I wish I met Shrew one on one. I would give her room in my family for her permanent accommodation and turn her into one of my family members. In addition, I have not traced a single grammatical error which makes me right to praise the author of this book.
