There is an increase in the use of drugs especially among teenagers. To most people who use drugs, it is a way of coping with stress and depression brought about by various problems. Chasing a Flawed sun by Daniel McGhee is a story about the author. It is an account of a young man’s violent and reckless life as he grows up; a life of addiction to alcohol, drugs and stealing. As a teenager, Daniel was influenced by pop culture, a quest for identity and gangs. He became addicted to drugs at a young age having grown up in Baltimore, a city that was known for heroin and cocaine use. His addiction took him throughout the streets of Maryland. Like other drug addicts, Daniel thought that by getting high with drugs and alcohol, all his problems will be solved. Daniel always wanted to change but was let down by his own weakness for drugs, alcohol and the fear of stress caused by different problems. He goes to a number of prisons and rehabilitation centers but would eventually relapse back to using drugs. After living a life of suffering, pain, guilt and shame, Daniel eventually took personal responsibility and realized that he was destroying his own life. While in prison and rehabilitation centers, he read the Bible, attended recovery meetings and fellowships. He began his journey to recovery and eventually became a successful business man.

The honesty of the Author is what I liked about the book. I commend the author for sharing with the readers his experiences as a drug addict. He gave a very good account of his life during the period when he was addicted to drugs. The story portrays the dangers of drug addiction and alcoholism. It portrays the feelings of an addict, why they behave the way they do and the effects to their families. Daniel’s story is a sad one but also motivational and inspirational. He always wanted to change but kept relapsing. However, he never gave up. I also liked the fact that the author explained what helped him to recover. From different prisons, to rehabilitation centers, until he changed his perception and accepted to take personal responsibility for his life. “The key to being successful in sobriety is willingness and surrender,” says the Author. He also realized that dealing with the problem of drug addiction is a long term endeavor. This shows that with determination, the problem can be overcome. This is an important message to those struggling to recover from drug addiction. It is a message of hope and encouragement to drug addicts, parents and relatives of addicts.

What I disliked about the book is the use of profane language. But most of it is reported speech. Generally, the book is professionally edited with very few errors. The story is inspiring to those struggling with drug addiction. It shows the battle an addict goes through and how people around them can help overcome the problem, just like Daniel’s family did.

I recommend this book to all those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. I also encourage young adults and adults to read the book. For the people working with drug addicts in rehabilitation centers, this book is very important.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It contains very few grammatical errors which are minor. The advice given to readers especially those battling with addiction is very valuable. The author’s journey can inspire the addicts and encourage them on their journey to recovery. It is a must read to all those affected by the problem of drug abuse.
