Reading Kalayla you are met with many similar themes and stories as other novels, however it is written in a unique way that prevents it from feeling stale. The story centers around the relationship between Kalayla, her elderly landlady and neighbor Lena. The story does occasionally switch to the point of view of Kalayla's mother Maureen. This novel at times can feel stalled and action can slow down but it is worth the read! The author includes topics such as race, socioeconomic status, and growing up in a world where you do not feel included, however the author includes all of these things in a very clever way. These are not used merely to help the plot along, however they are used as a window into the characters themselves in a way that feels truly authentic like you are getting to know these characters personally. This is not a story where everyone is perfect, living in a perfect world with only minor problems. This story really paints a picture of a genuine human experience. Although this book is fiction it does not take any stretch of the imagination to make it feel real. A book I would recommend to anyone who enjoys hearing the lives of others. I would rate this book a 3 out of 4.
Swears in this book are used, however they are not excessive and used merely to express the frustrations of the characters. page 27 asshole, page 28 asshole, page 39 asshole, page 40 ***, pg 46 fat assed + asshole + asshole, 83 asshole, pg 84, hell, asshole
