We are first introduced with Rion Grean in, The Fourth Kinetic: Clairvoyants by Brady Moore, as he is about to start his first day at a new school. He plans to keep to himself as he has done in every other school. He feels that there’s no point in making new friends when he can’t keep a lasting relationship with them. After all, his mother moves them from place to place often, a requirement of her mysterious job Rion knows nothing about. That’s not the only mystery. He knows nothing about his father or how and why he has telekinetic abilities. When he becomes separated from his mother he will learn that there are others like him called the Clairvoyants. Each of the four breeds with their own different abilities. In a desperate effort to find his mother and uncover the truth of her past, all while outrunning an army instructed to hunt “his kind” down, he will finally get answers to questions he’s been asking for years and unlock the potential to his telekinesis.

I would like to start with saying that the book was very well edited. The characters in the book are diverse in personality and experience, which was interesting to see. I also applaud the racial diversity in the characters. Something of which we need more of in our books and movies. In addition, I find the powers Brady Moore created for the four different breeds of Clairvoyants to be very creative. Other than the Kinetics like Rion, there are Prophets who have visions of the future, Readers who can read the minds of others, and Aural who can transfer their consciousness into another being to control them. It was enjoyable to read about the advantages and risks of their distinct powers.

On the other hand, I was disappointed with our main character Rion. His character seemed a bit stale and lacking depth. I love seeing the negative sides and secrets to characters who are considered to be “good guys” come to light. After all, no one is perfect. Yet, I felt that Rion could do no wrong. He would always manage to beat or outwit someone against all odds. I would say that he is quite flawless and admired by all the other characters. Some of his moments felt almost like a day dream where everything goes right and you overcome all obstacles. There was nothing very concrete about what made him so special. All was contributed to his own efforts. I’m hoping in the next two upcoming books to this series we can see more of Rion’s not so perfect side.

I would rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. In my opinion, Rion needs more depth to his character. It was a bit disappointing to see, since the main character should be one of the most interesting. Other than that, I think this is a very entertaining book that young people, in specific, will enjoy.

I recommend this book to younger readers who are perhaps in middle school or high school. There’s plenty of action and it’s easy to follow along with the story. Rion also is 17 and I think teens will relate to his struggle of fitting in and finding where he belongs.
