Review of Memorie di un consulente di direzione
Memorie di un consulente di direzione is a book that is well described by its title. This book can very well be considered the memoir of a management consultant and the management consultant in question is the author of the book, Franco Guazzoni.
For the most part, this book describes Franco's life at a period when he worked in partnership with several companies as a management consultant. This book contains details of how Franco, Cino Sitia, Renato Jazzarelli, Rodolfo Winternitz, and Nuccio Urso started the company called MIDA after resigning from another management consulting company called Cegos. However, this book does not just talk about how the company was created, it goes into details about how tasks were accomplished, the problems encountered, and the ethics of the company. If you could sit down and read this book with rapt attention you would read about certain projects Franco and his colleagues embarked on, the results, and the obstacles they had to face to yield those results.
Although you might think this book is all business and only contains stories about business deals and running a business, this is not so. The author of this book also took some time to relate his personal life to the readers. He talks about his life as a child and how he was born during the time of "the war" in Italy, and his time living in Milan as a child. He spoke about how his family was displaced from their home due to a bombing. To make it more personal, he also made mention of the birthing of his children.
Reading this book has been an eye-opener to me because I fantasize about running my own company someday. I was able to pick up a couple of things about how to run a business smoothly, I learned about client management and decision making. I am not sure if it was the author's intention to pass along these lessons to the readers but he was able to do just that nonetheless. I also loved seeing some pictures in the book. This helped the author pass across his message more elaborately.
While I enjoyed reading this book to an extent, I do not consider it one of the best I have read. Even though the title of the book clearly implies that the author set out to share his experience as a management consultant in this book, I still felt the need for it to be a little more personal. The author tried to rectify this by including a section about his personal life; however, I have an objection to this manner of writing. I would have preferred if the author had included his personal experiences in the business section of the book. I think this would have made the story even better.
I also did not appreciate the fact that the author would go on and on mentioning names of companies or persons when just mentioning the names of a couple could have passed the message across.
This book has very good content even though it gets boring after reading for a long time on a stretch. This is why I rate it 3 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to people looking to start their own business. I also recommend it to lovers of autobiography.
