Review of Pastoring is Not What You Think
The focal character, Pastor Job, is a man of God who is very enthusiastic about his ministry and also cares about what is happening in the country. He labors in prayer so that the afflicted can win their battles. He is selfless and is always concerned about the problems of his congregation. Pastor Job was always motivating others and encouraging them to do what was right. However, in his personal life, he was experiencing many problems. He was in a precarious financial situation, yet there were so many things he had not done. His church was late in rent payments and was on the verge of eviction, and his wife wanted a new car. Despite having these problems, Pastor Job still believed that God would make things better. How do things turn out? Read and find out.
Pastoring is Not What You Think is a thought-provoking fictional book authored by Elijah Oladimeji. It explores the different roles assumed by pastors. These roles range from spreading the word of God and demonstrating selfless dedication to others to overseeing the business operation and facility upkeep. It also touches on the many unseen battles that some pastors go through. The book also touches on some hot topics like immigration, gun violence, and terrorism.
Character development in this book is praiseworthy. It was easy for me as a reader to connect with the characters. I managed to step inside the shoes of Pastor Job and invest in his journey. Pastor Job was a man who was always present whenever anyone needed his help. He was a man full of different responsibilities, but we also get to see the problems he faced as a human. Like any other woman, Lorraine had needs. As much as she put pressure on her husband, it is still part of human nature to want material things. These two examples are an illustration of how realistic and relatable the characters were in this book.
The conversations between characters in this story gave the illusion of real-life dialogues. The colloquies were deliberate, and they supported the overall conflicts. Pastor Job and Lorraine had conversations that can happen between married couples in real life.
This book is short and easy to read within one setting. I love the approach the author took in trying to pass his message across. He could have written a non-fiction book about the responsibilities and struggles of pastors; instead, he chose to write a fictional story that is entertaining but passes the same message. There is a lot to learn from this book; for instance, there are many ways in which God answers prayers. God answers prayers directly and indirectly.
There is nothing I disliked about this book. It was perfectly edited; I did not encounter any grammatical errors while reading it. The author used simple language which was easy to comprehend. Putting everything into consideration, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to Christians and anyone else who wants to learn more about the duties of pastors.
