Review of The Watchmaker’s Doctor
"If you could go back in time, what moment in your life would you return to and change a decision you now regret?".
Above is a question that most of us have been asked, or even asked ourselves. It's a question that invokes deep pondering into the regrets, expectations, and uncertainty that fills the days, months, and years of our existence.
Doctor Anaya Jones has not lived a happy life. She struggles each day with the demons of Bipolar II, as well as the constant regret of bad decisions that led to lifelong consequences. One fateful day, knowing she has moments to live, a retired watchmaker gives Anaya the chance to go back in time and re-live her life after choosing one decision to alter. She decides to return to the day when, at 17, she dropped out of high school. This time, she strives to improve her grades and pursue a college degree in Middle School Education. But what consequences will this bring? And if there are events that can be changed, are there some that cannot?
The Watchmaker's Doctor by G.M.T. Schuilling explores decisions, regrets, mortality, and time travel through the eyes of a thirty-five-year-old woman reliving her young adult years. It is thought-provoking and gripping, as well as endearing and inspiring. The way that pain is viewed and discussed makes the reader see from a different perspective, such as in the lines “Doesn’t it seem sad to you that pain can bring two people together and forge a bond that wasn’t there?”
“On the contrary, Ana. I consider it a testament that pain can be overcome if it’s shared.”
This, among other themes, stirs in the reader a sense of determination.
Another example is how Ana, initially working solely for her own betterment, sees that her good decisions benefit those around her in ways that make her life even more fulfilling than she originally imagined.
Finally, there is the warning of not wasting time, which the author reflects in a concise and efficient writing style that maintains the brisk pace of the story.
The author also has a fantastic way of making the reader feel the same emotions as the protagonist, whether they be happiness, anxiety, or anger. I found this emotional connection deepening each time I came to any experience similar to my own.
For a relatively short book, I was amazed that so many details and events could be described in such a natural, comprehensive manner. The plot twists and unpredictability kept me so entrenched in the story that I finished the whole book in under two hours.
The Watchmaker's Doctor is a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable read, which I am happy to rate 4 out of 4 stars . Excellent storytelling, professional editing, and inspiring content make this book suitable for young adults and advanced adults alike. I wait with great anticipation for the next installment!
