Review of The Raven's Trail (Book 1)
Chloe has a job in the company of her dreams, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. While cataloguing Pre-columbian items, she comes across a strange triangular rock with symbols engraved all over its surface. To her utter surprise, the stone illuminates on her touch. Her instincts compel her to investigate further. Determined to uncover the secrets of the Native-American relic, she stumbles upon Mason who unbeknownst to her, is burdened with a secret of his own.
I loved the protagonist, Chloe Doyle. She was lovable and relatable. As a fan of romance, I've come across innumerable annoying main characters but Chloe is not one of them! She makes adept decisions at climactic points of the story. Mason is captivating. He's not one of those typical cold-hearted and rude love interests. The romance is a part of a bigger picture in this story. This book feels more of a paranormal mystery novel that has romance in it.
This book is narrated from many Point-of-views. There are multiple storylines progressing along with different characters. Moreover, while reading it is anticipated that all these storylines will surely come together at the end and they do!
Marx does an incredible job leaving bits of foreshadowing and clues that made me keep reading the novel, even if that meant losing some sleep. There are generous jumps in the timeline, written in a very strategic manner and gave relevant information about the story. Never did the jumps feel unnecessary or out of place.
Although this being my first time reading about Native-American culture, I could tell there was substantial research done by the author. The use of foreign words in the text gave the story an authentic feel. I must say, the glossary at the very beginning was quite convenient.
I cannot think of any negative points for this novel. There were barely any errors or grammatical mistakes. It was unquestionably well-written with an engaging plot and wonderful characters. I will say, however, the end is has a slight cliffhanger that sets up the next book.
I have little to no negative remarks about this book and I had a pleasant time it so, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend The Raven's Trail (Book 1) by Liz D. Marx to those who fancy reading romance, magic and delving into the supernatural. Be as that it may, there are erotic scenes, an instance of sexual assault and occasional use of profanities. Consequently, this book is not fit for children.
