Lauren Powers takes us through her incredible journey of transformation. As a little child, she has always been an overachiever in all areas of her life. This is made very self-evident in her perfect 4.0 GPA score at the university, her dominance in fields that are male-dominated. She was a firefighter and while at the job, she rose the ranks, which is rare for a woman. She also got into bodybuilding and excelled at it despite being considered too old for the sport.

In this book, Ms. Powers shows that all things are within your reach if you set out to do them with an unwavering sense of direction and focus. She discusses her struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. This crippled her to the point she had to get into rehab. During her time at the rehab, she decides to transform herself to become a better person. Using this determination, she grows and overcomes her addiction. Ms. Powers has also built a successful business which is her chain of gyms, she has had a show on television, her career path, which is unlike what many people would take, has been successful. She is the embodiment of breaking free from other people’s opinions and going after your own desires.

In the book, she discusses her struggle with bullying. She was bullied as a child, and now as an adult, she experiences some form of bullying with the way her body looks. As a woman, some people consider her too manly, but she says she prefers the term strong.

I really enjoyed reading this book and would strongly recommend it for anyone who is looking for motivation. If you need a boost of encouragement to go after what you deserve, if there have been many failures in your life and you want to give up, read this book first. I also enjoyed the pictures that she included in the book. It helps create a sense of connection from the reader to the author. Beneath the Muscle is a testament that despite the bulk and intimidating exterior Lauren exudes, she is human. She is a person with feelings and emotions. She has undergone pain throughout her life and has emerged victorious. And she encourages her readers not to be afraid to come out and go after what makes them truly happy.

The only thing I did not like about the book is the constant referrals at the end of each chapter to her workbook. It came across as prompts to buy the workbook. This is definitely something that put me off the reading. But other than that, this was a good read. I found it quite enjoyable and easy to read.

I give this book a four out of four stars. It was quite a captivating read and I found no errors.
