Legend of the Dragon Runes is a fantasy novel written by Ryan Carriere which follows the lives of two young individuals, Roeg and Sephonei. Roeg finds himself in a clan where he just cannot fit in. People say he is cursed because of his burnt hand, blue hair, and the constant misfortune he brings upon the clan. A burden to his people, Roeg is determined to prove his worth in the Great Hunt or die trying. On the other hand, Sephonei, living across the sea of Atlantis is forced to become a Rune Hunter. She is sent on a deadly mission across the mainland to search for a powerful Dragon Rune. She can either survive the trials by completing her mission or a deadly end awaits her.

The book is an illustrated fantasy for young adults and the first part of Heroes of Atlantis, a five-book saga telling the story of a mythical and ancient land full of dangerous creatures or monsters. It is full of action, drama, comedy, and tales of bravery and friendship, thus having something for each reader.

The book is set perfectly with respect to the geographical location and physical environment, each scene meticulously describing every little detail. However, the story fails to mention a time period, which I think works in favor of the story by not making it time-bound.

The main characters are pretty well developed as well, Roeg’s story being completely understandable and interesting. Sephonei was extremely relatable as a character. Anyone would react the way she did when thrown into a situation like hers. I would have loved some backstory on her character though.

The best thing about the book though is that it is able to establish its story and provides the reader with a satisfying conclusion even though it is only the first book in a five-book saga. There were cliff-hangers for sure but not any loose ends. Roeg’s character arc was satisfying and Sephonei has so much more scope to explore.

The story was well written, well set, and extremely well-paced. The illustrations seemed a bit unnecessary but maybe they were added keeping the target audience in mind. The book is written for young adults and the illustrations can be used to break the monotony, even though there is none according to me. Even the writing style suits the genre perfectly. The book was written from two characters’ points of view and is following two stories simultaneously which will eventually merge but is fun to read for now.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars since I enjoyed it. Its story and writing style keep the readers engrossed throughout and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a fun and easy-to-read fantasy novel.
