Detective Jen Connors of NYPD gets back to work after a disastrous accident on her last case only to be tied up in a new case appointed with a crackhead transfer partner Detective Ross. In any case, after the rebound, Connor needs to battle for her career and prove that she is just about as in great shape to proceed with her job without anyone scrutinizing her fitness due to past horrible events of her life. Assigned a homicide case, with horrible leads, both Connors and Ross fall into a snare created by a mob member. However, even with differences of opinions both the detectives have to work together to solve the case that could cause tremendous damage.

Something that I genuinely appreciated about the novel, White Night, is that J.J. Holt ensured that her book is not like your regular murder mystery novels. Most of the murder mysteries fall into the same worn-out pattern, but Holt took a complete U-turn. Detective Connors, the protagonist, alongside her other characters that share an almost equal light in the book has damaged past all responsible for the turn of events that has the case getting more exciting.

I also liked the way the characters developed eventually throughout the book. Furthermore, no, there were no romantic feelings involved between Detective Connors and Detective Ross, which is quite invigorating and so out of the mainstream plots where co-workers eventually fall in love by the end of the book. Holt showcased Connor’s struggle as a traumatized and damaged woman because of the accident who only wish to become independent after the horrible events in her life, beautifully. White Night is no doubt a more character-driven novel which might I add is its most noteworthy strength.

Another thing that I loved about the book is how Holt plotted the entire crime scene. It was unique and substantially intense than your regular murder mystery plots. There wasn’t even a single moment where it felt as though there was a superfluous drag of conversations or the plot was getting exhausting or stretchy. The book had my complete and utter attention. White Night is an unquestionably captivating novel.

Nonetheless, something frustrating about the book is that there are plenty of characters included. In case if you are that sort of a person that reads with longer breaks, you might as well take time recalling all the characters once you resume your reading.

Aside from that, the book is professionally edited with minimum errors. I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, for the amazing plots and creative writing skills of the author, yet in addition, taking out 1 star for minor blunder as well as unnecessary involvement of a lot of characters. If you love mystery-thriller novels, go ahead with this book without any hesitation, and for those who would love to give mystery thriller novels a chance, this is a decent book to get going with.
