The Fisherman and His Foundlings is a short story that speaks of kindness and bravery. Written by Phillip Leighton-Daly, the book is about a noble fisherman whose selflessness puts his life in danger.

Having lost his wife 10 years ago, the fisherman takes care of the leper colony children by himself and delivers to them a portion of the fishes he catches every day. One day, he discovers a hurt merchild on his journey, who eventually turns out to be a bait set by the evil merfolk queen. The queen considers kindness to be a weakness and wishes to kill the fisherman and put an end to his good deeds. The story continues to reveal if the fisherman escapes from the clutches of the merfolk queen and whether he manages to rescue the merchild.

The story is an emotional one and gives a profound message to the reader about loss, selflessness, heroism, and the lasting impression it leaves on those who witness it. JRaphael Edmundo Honasan has done a great job with the illustrations as they go with the story quite well. They perfectly capture the personalities of the characters, like the weary but brave fisherman, the sinister merfolk queen, the grateful kids of the leper colony, etc.

Considering that this is a children’s book, the writing is slightly difficult to understand. There are many words in the story, especially in the beginning for which I had to consult a dictionary. Furthermore, I feel that the font style used for the text is not easy on the eyes which made the reading a bit uncomfortable for me. Nonetheless, I have no complaints with the plot of the story and the book seems to be professionally edited.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, mainly because I found it slightly tough to read. Therefore it might not be a good fit for children. However, if the writing style is simplified, it would be a great thought-provoking tale for young readers. It has a very strong moral and I feel that every child should be familiar with this story.

The Fisherman and His Foundlings is suitable for those who are looking to expand their vocabulary. I do not recommend this book to second or third graders as it would be hard for them to understand it, if they read it on their own. Because of the strong message behind the story, teenagers and young adults would also enjoy this quick read.
