Kalayla at a young age knows what she really wants and very independent child. Most likely to say that she is an old woman trapped in the body of a young girl. She speaks to her mind, one day she found out about the lies that half of her life believe in to.
When her father died, Kalayla’s mom Maureen takes all the responsibilities. It was really hard for her knowing that her own family disowned her. She really needs to pull herself together because if not, her mother-in-law will come to take Kalayla. They really need to move out and find a life elsewhere. Maureen found herself working at Eddie’s and renting an apartment across the street. Now there’s this old lady who owns the apartment in which they are staying.
The Old lady who have this eye for the mother and daughter, especially Kalayla because she reminded her of her twins. Long after, she learns to love these two. She is almost like a mother to Maureen and a grandmother to Kalayla. The old lady gradually learns how life is dealing for this mother and daughter. And when a tremendous situation comes to Maureen, the old lady is there to save her.

Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas will lead you to a place where the true situation is going on around the families culture and beliefs. The unconditional love of a mother to her son, no matter what the circumstances are, and how far a mother could go to disown her own child.

As I am reading this book, there were some profanity that is not appropriate to say by a child. And as a mother myself, I will also not allow this kind of words to say by my kids towards the other.

I rate this book three out of four, I like the characters on this book, and it has a reality about the racial and a loving family.

I most probably recommend this book to the young adults and adult readers.
