Wasting Time by Mike Murphy is the second installment in the Tale of Physics, Lust, and Greed series. The story starts out in the hot Arizona desert miles and miles from any type of civilization. Sheila is one of the very special individuals who have uncovered the secret of time travel. In this epic science fiction romance adventure, time travel is made possible by sending a person’s consciousness back to themselves in the past. Sheila gets sent back in time before she was born in what looks like a murder attempt. Now it’s up to the other time travelers to rescue her from limbo. From this point on we follow Marta and Marshall as they fight against both physical enemies and exhausting political red tape.

We’ve all read different ways about how time travel could be made possible, but I really think the author thought outside of the box with this concept. Usually, time travel involves a more mechanical approach instead of using someone’s thoughts. He was also able to combine the genres of science fiction, romance, and mystery so smoothly you would have thought it was its own genre.

The author seemed to show a lack of creativity when it came to naming the different universes. Instead of taking the time to create original names, he chose to name them after TV shows. The main universe was called “I Love Lucy” which might have been an attempt at humor, but I believe it took away from the story instead of adding to it. What’s funny to me is if someone went to the wrong universe, they would know as soon as they arrived because the theme song plays in their head as they approach it.

My overall rating for Wasting Time is 3 out of 4 stars. The book had exceptional character development and used enough facts based on science to make it 100% believable. There never seemed to be a dull moment and the excitement continued to build the farther you delved into the story. This book was professionally edited since I didn’t find typos or errors.

I highly recommend adult readers with a love for all things science fiction read this book. Even though this book is part of a series, it can be read without having to read the series in order. This is nice because if you didn’t like the first book, Taking Time, you would have missed out on this masterpiece! There is a significant amount of profanity and explicit sex scenes making this inappropriate for children and teenagers.
