Wolfgang’s Castle, the second tale in Rex W Last’s Germans Against Hitler series, is a story about a handful of people diametrically opposed to Hitler’s Third Reich and their attempts to thwart the plans of the enemy. In this particular adventure, a small team of Nazi-opposing Germans and a few British operatives join forces to create and carry out an imperative, Churchill-sanctioned mission to foil Germany’s production of a potentially havoc-wreaking machine. The unfortunate completion of Germany’s top secret plan would undoubtedly push the war into the irrevocable favor of Hitler and the Nazi party.

Last does a phenomenal job of combining wit and humor with the heaviness of World War II German society. Unfathomably difficult those times were for Germans and the world at large. The author succeeds in capturing the variety of everything German citizens were forced to wrestle with, face, and decide during Hitler’s implementation of his infamous Third Reich. For the story itself, it was especially enjoyable to follow the characters’ journey through successes, set backs, close calls, and a plethora of other encounters common to such endeavors. Each character was unique and vital to the story. I also love that every character introduced was creatively interwoven with each of the other characters. Finally, Last’s exceptional use of language is evident throughout the entire book. Many a word I had to look up, thus, expanding my vocabulary.

While I loved the cleverly orchestrated adventures of the characters, I think some of the individual antagonists may have been overshadowed a bit. When we were introduced to one of the bad-guys, the character was portrayed as extraordinarily sinister. However, after the initial introduction, you hear faint whispers of the individual’s exceedingly diabolical plan to ascend within the Nazi party, but you don’t see much else until the very end. I would have liked to see that character have a slightly more prominent role, but only slightly.

I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. Three stars accredited to the amazingly creative, cleverly crafted story and likable characters. The one star withdrawn for the occasional lulls in the story, as well as, the minor overshadowing of a somewhat key character.

I would recommend this book for people 15 years of age and older. The rare violence and very muted relations between a couple of characters may not be suitable for anyone younger. However, any World War II enthusiast or lovers of a fun story should pick this book up.
