Review of Running the Sahara
After completing one of the most challenging marathons - the Marathon de Sables - Marcel Nickler recounts his adventure in Running the Sahara. Marathon des Sables is a 250-kilometers marathon through the Moroccan Sahara. Apart from retelling his participation in the marathon, the author reveals his intention in writing the book is to inspire people. He shares his dreams, goals, dedication, and how running a marathon changed his life.
The book is divided into six parts, corresponding to each stage of the marathon. In each stage, the author recites all the hardships he faced and the beauty of the desert he found in the middle. Trivial pieces of information found throughout the story prove his understanding of life. Through his unique perspective, Marcel Nickler takes us retaking every step he took in the Marathon des Sables 2017. Not only described through visualization, but the author also combines other senses such as hearing so that the reader can absorb the environment.
The flow of the story is what I like most about this book. Which exactly shows the author's thoughts while doing the marathon. In between the narratives of the run, the author inserts his experience leads to the event. The alternating chapters are a great way to reveal his motivation and preparation for Marathon des Sables. The mention of support from his wife, coach, family, and friends also made me feel like this book is a very personal work. Even though he had to go through long preparations, a challenging environment, and hardships, in the end, the author proves that we can achieve our dreams through hard work.
The second thing I like about the book is the straightforward and confident writing style that makes readers excited and understand the story better. The writing style is selected accurately. It motivates the readers, and it also suits the main character of the story. The author shares his perspective of life through running; living the journey matters more than the finish line itself.
By the end of the book, Marcel shares a collection of photographs of scenery, friends, and moments. It helps us visualize the settings and be in touch with the story. He also shares his complete equipment and supplies list in preparation for the marathon. An additional part that I found very touching and a great way to end the book. From the beginning to the end, Marcel Nickler succeeded in inspiring readers with his dedication. I believe the book is professionally edited since I found no grammatical or spelling errors. For those reasons, I rate this book a solid 4 out of 4.
I would recommend this book for aspiring runners or athletes and those who are preparing for a marathon. But I also recommend this book for those who seek a wonderful life lesson. This book is both informative for fellow runners and exquisitely written. I was charmed by the book. After reading the book, I feel motivated to try new things and be more dedicated to my dreams.
