Leaving Dahomey is historical fiction book. It is based on cultural and traditional of the ancient Kingdom of Dahomey, which is in West Africa. Adeoha is a young girl, whose life changed as she learned more about her roots. The book is divided into 10 chapters and it has approximately 170 pages.

The book is not just about Adeoha, but it is about different cultures, myths and traditions. Adeoha Adetoye was chosen to be part of an ancient ancestor circle. Which was known as the Language of Drums. Sewextu her friend, introduced Adeoha to the ancient circle. After few months, Adeoha left the group. She was only interested in learning more about her ancestral history.

This story took place in the African Kingdom of Dahomey, which was ruled by the most feared king. Adeoha's father was also accused of trying to overthrow the king. The main focus was on Adeoha's family. Some characters were not given the spotlight. Adeoha had the able to tell stories, which no one knew. The book is overwhelming and very confusing.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The main focus was on Adeoha's journey, of discovering her true identity. Some characters were not given the spotlight. However, the traditions and cultures were well presented.
