Mixed blessings by J.M. Muse is thee story of a girl named Kimberly. Kimberly wonders why she has to choose to belong to one race over the others when the government is telling her otherwise. After a trip to Mexico, Kimberly learns more about herself and her family. When her friends shun her for her race, Kim learns to depend on herself more. The minister Kublai Khan is a man obsessed with change. He is fighting for the rights of people of colour but his methods are a little radical. He believes that he can fight racism by making the African American population the majority. He plans to accomplish this by making a lot of Asian ladies bear children with African American fathers. Of course, it’s a bad idea.

What I liked about the story is that J.M. Muse doesn’t shy away from the gory details of racism and social injustices. For example we see Kublai Khan's mindset in the story. Kublai khan is a radical person with ppeculiar methods. It is almost outrageous that he has sway over so many people. These people all believe in his view of racism. J.M. Muse tells it as it is. I also loved the diversity of the characters and the settings. The story is told from multiple locations. It is also about different characters who have different points of view. From Kimberly to Ahmed to Kublai to Chaka to holiday, all the characters have different lives and different mindsets.

what I disliked about the story was that most of the time religion was mentioned, it was depicted as a form of belief with manipulative pastors at the centre. I was also disappointed because J.M. Muse doesn’t offer a proper solution for racism. Although the characters are fighting against racism each in their way, there is no logical solution. I also found the pacing of the book to be a little inconsistent.

I would rate the book 2 out of 4 stars because it was a little confusing at the start. I did not get to connect with the characters until the book was halfway. Once I got to understand all the characters and the settings, however, I liked the story.

I would recommend Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse to anyone who loves fiction stories. I would also recommend it to any audience above the age of eighteen years. I would also recommend it to anyone interested in the issue of racial discrimination and social injustices in the United States of America.
