Review of Beneath the Muscle
Beneath the Muscle: Unleash Your Inner Champion by Lauren Powers is a captivating read about the lessons Powers has learned throughout her life and on her journey to becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the body-building world. This book was written exceptionally well and allowed readers to see a different side to Powers than one they may already be familiar with. The advice given in this book is nothing new, but the life experiences Powers tells allow readers to see the lessons in action.
Alongside the book, there is a companion workbook that readers can use to implement the strategies and knowledge that Powers presents in her book. The workbook, referenced at the end of every chapter, adds another layer of depth to this book and takes the information given in the book and pushes readers to really understand what she's trying to teach.
This book is well organized, and the order the events are told is smooth and well thought out. Through her life experiences Power includes in her book, the life lessons that are taught are backed up with direct evidence. The inclusion of her past allows Powers to show the journey she was taken on to learn the lessons she has and validates the advice she gives, allowing readers to feel as though she has authority on the topics she speaks about.
Throughout the book, Powers uses past experiences, both positive and negative, to motivate readers to live up to their full potential. The stories Powers tells are all relevant and add to the book's overall message, and all build on one another to give readers a comprehensive storytelling experience.
Overall, this book is highly motivating and gives good insight into the life of Lauren Powers, someone who takes comfort in being different. Powers encourages readers to accept the things that make them different and use them to their advantage. Through humour and honesty, Powers presents common lessons with her own unique twist, never making a claim or giving advice without providing the experience or evidence to support it.
I believe this book is professionally edited due to the lack of mistakes I found it in. On the whole, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of Powers' fantastic storytelling abilities and the successful teaching of life lessons that are both relevant and important. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults who are looking for a boost in motivation and the reassurance that any obstacle in life can be overcome and used to one's advantage. Anyone interested in fitness will find this book to be a good read.
