Review of Fast-Starting A Career of Consequence
Fast-Starting a Career of Consequence: Practical Christ-Centered Advice for Entering or Re-Entering the Workforce is a non-fiction book written by Fred Sievert. It reads like an instructional manual for businesses and a self-help book for Christians and non-Christians. He provides many business and spiritual principles throughout the chapters. I feel this book is probably the best professional and personal guide for everyone to use in their daily lives. Fred shares several of his qualifications and experiences in the workforce. He also shares his Christian wisdom and teachings as a gifted leader. He earned his degree in theology from Yale Divinity school.
The book is divided into three simple sections. The first one is his introduction and explanation of why he wrote it. He also tells us about the gifts God gave him and his expertise in the business world. The second section explains how to identify and apply your gifts in life and in the workplace. The third section shares many research resources and gives simple instructions on how to become a gentle and humble leader. The author has also written an extensive workbook (by the same name) to supplement this book. Completing the workbook will guide us to discover our spiritual gifts.
This book works more like an instructional manual than a regular book. It covers a variety of topics for you to discover as you work through the chapters. Every chapter has several quotations from the Bible that work well with the present topic being discussed at that time. There are many positive parts to this book. The foreword is the first one. It is very important to read it as part of the instructional and inspirational information. This book is not only organized by three sections, it is also organized by chapters. The first five chapters are given to teach the application of Bible principles in the workplace. The next ten chapters are given to teach several fast-starting tips. There are also quizzes and assessments to help evaluate where we need to improve to succeed in life. The recommendations and suggestions that he provides are practical for both the workplace and our daily life activities.
What I liked most about this book were the Bible scriptures that the author included in each chapter. I was not aware that the Bible had so many scriptures that taught us how we were supposed to act in the workplace and in all areas of our lives. The other part that I like about this book is how easy it is to understand and work through.
There was nothing I didn’t like about this book. It was especially well edited. I found zero errors. The author has included an Appendix and quizzes that can be useful while reading this manual. He also recommends other books that will be beneficial to the reader. The workbook would be great to have on hand while working through it as well. I will gladly rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to anyone who is entering the workforce for the first time, those who may be coming back to work for various reasons and to people who might be looking for a new job. Christians and non-Christians can benefit from the strategies, techniques and principles laid out here.
