Vows are suppose to be a lifelong commitment. At least that’s what we are taught growing up to believe. For Neil and Ellie, this is a battle they have to come to terms with. To live a life with their wife and husband, having their feelings void or to commit to another who ignites a spark deep into their soul that makes them see everything come alive again.

When Ellie decides to give back kindness to Neil who works at a bakery shop, she never expected that giving him a book would set into motion a chain of emails that eventually lead friendship and possibly something more.

Looking Glass Friends by E.L. Neve brings two people whose only connection is through books. Both Neil and Ellie are married to other people. Other than occasional visits to the bakery are complete strangers to each other. They have a life that is committed to their vows and their partners. Except everyone has secrets. Sometimes those secrets are buried so deep to avoid hurting those we think we love. Those types of secrets can also eat away at persons mind, body and soul.

The book I felt was not to long. What I did not enjoy was how many and how long some quote references from other books there was within the story. The main characters connect over them but, I felt the shorter quotes held more of an impact than the lengthy quotes.

What I really enjoyed most about the book was that it gave all four sides of two marriages. If only we could open a book and read what our significant others are thinking and feeling how much could it change an outcome I wonder. Unfortunately that is something that is not a option.

Going on almost three years divorced myself I was able to connect to the story and how I had seen my relationship with my ex husband. Of course, not as romantically dramatic as the book but asking myself if I had only known the beginnings of my husbands thoughts and feelings. The people we commit forever in partnership with we decide to shut out our inner most feelings from.

The characters in the book were such a wonderful variety of people who we see in our own every day society. Neil who financially struggles but works really hard would do anything for his wife to be happy. Fay, Neil’s wife, gets to do what she loves. Ellie gets to be a stay at home wife and mother. Money is never meant much to her and even though her husband has millions she still prefers to do everything herself. Her husband Jake, sees Ellie as a possession he owns and that is more precious than any antique that has came through his shop.

The story had very little writing errors. Other than lengthy quotes from other authors it was an easy read. I would give this book a 3 out of 4 stars.

Looking Glass Friends Is not intended for younger readers since it does discuss tempted suicide and sexual content. I would recommend this book to mature readers who like drama and romance.
