Review of Fast Starting a Career of Consequence: Workbook
Entering the field of work after graduation can be an extremely daunting and overwhelming experience, as many crucial aspects must be considered before career choices are made. One’s spirituality, ethics, morals, and values must be contemplated in order to select a company or job that meets one’s personal needs. Fast-Starting a Career of Consequence: Workbook by Fred Sievert acts as a guide and provides critical advice to readers on how to practice and apply biblical concepts in the workplace and in one’s career. It explains how to utilize spiritual gifts to excel, how to maintain consistency with your values and beliefs, and how to apply biblical principles and teachings to identify and harness new skills. Sievert encourages readers to integrate Jesus and prayer into their workplace and propounds some helpful tips for launching and propelling one's career in the best potential direction. Its goal is to assist people in striking and maintaining the right balance in their lives between work, family, and faith.
This book is extremely interactive as it contains self-assessment tests, questions to provoke introspection and thought, and areas for personal notes, all of which ensure reader understanding and engagement. An aspect of the book that I particularly appreciated is that it can be read as a standalone book, as each chapter and its concepts are written in a concise, well-explained manner.
This workbook acts as an invaluable source of instruction for persons setting foot in the world of work, particularly in the current global Covid-19 crisis. It is current and provides advice on how to navigate issues that were caused by the pandemic. The author does not target a specific social class, but rather provides guidance for persons of various work and social backgrounds.
Although I am not religious, I found this book to be immensely insightful on how to improve and excel in one’s career. However, it is only after the fifth chapter that information that is serviceable to non-Christians is found. Because of this, it proved to be exceedingly tedious to read through five chapters before arriving at the part that was helpful to me. This had a negative impact on my enjoyment of the book.
Despite the fact that this book is heavily steeped in religion and Christianity, it is informative to those who do not share the author’s religious beliefs. Therefore, it may be suitable for entrepreneurs and those looking to find a foothold in the work sector regardless of their religious beliefs. However, given the ecclesiastical aspects, it is most suitable for Christian readers, as they would be able to fully partake in all of the author’s teachings. Although no grammatical errors were found, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, as it took a notable amount of time to reach the part that is helpful to non-religious readers.
