Review of Rise of the Savior
Eighteen-year-old Amanda's plans include competing in karate, graduating high school, and heading to college, along with trying to understand her estranged six-year-old sister Saira. In a frightening car accident one day, Amanda and her father are caught in an unexpected storm that leaves them both comatose. Amanda travels to a mysterious realm where she meets her Kundalini Leyna, who reveals that Amanda is the Acolyte of truth and has the power to summon guns and tell when someone lies or tells the truth. When Amanda regains consciousness in the real world, she tries to come to terms with a life she didn't want and a responsibility she can't accept. A threat arises and endangers the lives of countless others, including Amanda's family, which forces her to turn to her new calling and join forces with a secret agent to stop a desperate man, Jamie, from sacrificing children to save his dying son. With her newfound friends and deity Ameena, Amanda must choose between saving the world from a sinister plan and following the path that saves lives or turning her back and letting the world be destroyed.
Author Antoine Bonner writes fast-paced, action-packed novels. His characters are relatable and have compelling backstories and motives that shape their personalities. It was fascinating to see the antagonist's journey and why he chose such extreme measures to save the last person he loves. The story kept me turning pages and excited to see how it ended.
It was enjoyable to read the overall story, although it became difficult to follow as it progressed. The action scenes were confusing at times because so much was happening all at once. It was challenging to comprehend some of the symbolism mentioned in the story, such as Kundalini and deities. There are a lot of complex topics surrounding non-western religions that I am unfamiliar with.
In conclusion, I give Rise of the Savior: Acolyte of Truth a 3 out of 4 stars rating. Although it was confusing at times, I managed to stay interested in the story. It introduced various concepts, some of which are new to me.
I recommend this book to young adults/adults due to the violent graphic scenes, profanity, and overall recurring theme of death. The book is best suited for readers interested in mythology and religion outside of western beliefs. That said, I think an audience interested in urban fantasy would still enjoy the novel.
