The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a book that portrayed the importance of fruitful friendships, love, and family. Five women from different backgrounds, with different lifestyles and with different views on common matters met in unexpected ways and developed a strong bond. These women learnt what patience means through the art of fly fishing. Fly fishing and the times they spent together taught them the importance of cherishing those they love dearly. Rose, the eldest in the group met her first friend ever, Sophie, at a fly fish shop. Fortunately for Sophie who was a beginner in the craft of fly fishing, Rose became a teacher, confidant, and a mother-like figure in her life in terms of fly fishing and much more weighty matters. Sophie, in turn, brought the others into the family of fly fishing. Whilst Sophie was on a fly fishing trip, she met Veronica, who was on an executive trip. Sophie met Amanda by circumstance when she hosted an event for families of a certain workgroup. Melody, the last but not the least to join the group got to meet and know the other four through a weird situation. This group of five women who love fishing shows that friendships can be like priceless pearls if the right people are met. Rose found sisters and daughters, Veronica and Sophie found sisters, Amanda and Melody found mothers. Through their experiences in the art of fly fishing, they learnt that nothing is as precious as looking out for others while maintaining their vigor and being vulnerable at times. Fly fishing was not just a craft to them, it was a way of learning how to perceive whatever it is that life throws at them, to learn the preciousness of relationships.

I loved the book because, from the perspective of fly fishing, lessons were learnt. I loved the book because it was well arranged and divided into Sections by Michelle, with each Section portraying how fly fishing relates to life as a whole. I liked the fact that before each section, quotes from well-respected men and women with vast knowledge in fly fishing were mentioned. The different points of view of the women written boldly gave me insight into how each situation affected them, into their lives before fly fishing, and their reasons for making the decisions that they made. The book was well spaced in between chapters and sections, and that made me aware of a change in points of view and situations. Proper punctuation was also a highlight of the book, and that prevented confusion. Michelle’s way of writing the book brought out the feelings of the characters in their thoughts and words, thereby bringing different emotions out of me.

Whilst I loved so many things about the book, the long introduction to fly fishing did not appeal to me. I felt that Michelle let out more details about fly fishing than was needed for me to know. For this reason, it took a while before I grasped the storyline of the book.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. For one, the book was well edited and this made reading the book smooth. I enjoyed reading the book because I felt connected to each of the characters and was made to understand them.

I recommend this book to people who love lessons in virtues such as patience, people that are keen on understanding how rewarding relationships can improve one’s view of others. This book is for a wide range of audiences, as long as their interest lies in learning about companionship, the rewards of friendship, and family.
