Make Me Exist (Lost in Time Book 1) by Brittany Ziegler is a sci-fi/fantasy fiction novel filled with intrigue, action, romance, and family. Valerie Carling’s daughter Charlotte’s 6th birthday party, at her father and stepmother’s house, is crashed early by 3 strangers. These strangely familiar men have the same exceptionally bright green eyes as Charlotte. All four members of the Carling family are suddenly taken from their ordinary lives in Wisconsin, USA to the Greater Khingan Mountains in China. They are forced by new allies to accept that aliens are real, something called the God Stone exists, and Val is in fact the last pure-blood female left of an increasingly sterile race. Valerie needs to remember her lost life with these individuals in order to protect her daughter, and their family, from those that are hunting them, unlocking her true self and her true power, before it is too late. If that wasn’t enough stress, she also has long buried feelings resurfacing for an old flame from her childhood that she needs to figure out what to do about, and this decision may end up changing all of their fates. Val and Char’s adventure crosses the boundaries of time itself. They’re all in mortal danger, but Val has more at stake than just herself. She cannot hesitate if she wants to win.

In this first installment of the Lost in Time series, Ziegler proves that in Valerie Carling’s life nothing is impossible. You should keep an open mind while experiencing Val’s story, and still expect to be surprised. The relationships and personalities in this book are intricate and well thought out. You learn about this fascinating, expansive world at an easily digestible pace while coming to care for each character in Valerie’s family. The scenes are set so well I can clearly picture the landscapes in my mind. Make Me Exist delves deep into the main character’s psyche and it explores many themes, such as parenthood, love, life, and death.

The author is able to project the character’s feeling off of the page, I was right there with them, and they felt like real people. The villains are able to unsettle you and leave you eager for their defeat. Ziegler is able to write the relationship between mother and young daughter skillfully, their love and bond can always be felt. Charlotte is pure, love, and light. Valerie is a strong female who is steady, brave, and knows where her priorities lie. She will protect her daughter above all things, but will also make sure those she cares about are taken care of right after. The story unfolds at a satisfying, steady pace. Each answered question feeds your curiosity as you discover new details. Ziegler ends Make Me Exist with a soft cliffhanger. If you are like me, then you are excited for the second installment of Lost in Time, but, if you wanted to you could also stop there and feel satisfied.

From the moment I began the book I was drawn into this world. Each twist and turn had impact and left an impression on me after I finally put the book down. Not every step taken along the way was a pleasant one. This book does include content some may want a trigger warning for, pertaining to various kinds of abuse, as these two factions are basically at war with each other, and in war there are no rules or boundaries. This novel is violent. These characters go through events that leave them traumatized or injured. Some scenes are difficult to read, because they are painful situations which are being written with descriptive language. If you are able to read through these moments, you are rewarded with a rich and satisfying story made all the better for the obstacles these characters have overcome. They may not always make decisions you expect or like, but that is because they are amply rounded out individuals. I found some of Val’s relationship decisions quite shocking, but in the world of Make Me Exist it still somehow manages to make sense.

I highly recommend this book for people who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, action, and romance. This story contains both profanity and sexual content. The scenes of physical intimacy are descriptive. The action scenes involve intense bloody battles. The power levels are consistent, and the protagonists have to really work for their successes, while also suffering losses. This is an enjoyable work of fiction for adults. While reading this I laughed out loud, I felt sadness, I cringed, and I blushed. Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars .
