Mixed Blessings: Is Race Real? is a book that explores the topic of race. J.M. Muse, the book's author, talks about the racial discrimination that minority groups would have faced in contemporary America, how differently contemporary freedom activists would have handled the issue of racial discrimination, and the confusion that would have arisen from the mixed-race population as to which racial group the government should group these individuals, as well as the challenges that these mixed-race individuals would have faced as to which racial group to identify themselves with if people like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X had not intervened and stood up against racial discrimination the way they did during their time in the past.

In this fiction book, the author takes us through the life journeys of Kimberly Solberg, Michael Kublai Khan, Ahmed Reynolds, and Hoshiko Mathews as they deal with racial discrimination. There are other amazing characters in the story, but the aforementioned characters are the main focus of the story.

Kimberly Solberg is a mixed-race teenage girl. Having a Jewish mother and a Mexican father has not been easy on her as she struggles to strike a balance between adopting the Jewish and Mexican cultures and values while also dealing with racial discrimination from people. All Kimberly ever wanted was a simple life and to be accepted and loved just the way she is. So she embarks on a quest to find happiness and a sense of purpose for her life.

Michael Kublai Khan is the head of the House of Jeremiah Temples. He is a black man, an activist and a religious leader with many faithful followers in America. He, along with Les Solomon, a renowned demographer of the Institute of Numbers, and Reverend Hung Sung Suk of the World Energy Church of Seoul, believes that an increase in the mixed-race population will put an end to racial discrimination in America. So they devised a plan, which they called the "mocha effect," to counter racism.

Ahmed Reynolds is a black man and an ex-gangster whose life was turned around for the better when he met Michael Kublai Khan, who made him see life from a different perspective. Ahmed, like every other young man, has plans for his future.

Hoshiko Mathews, popularly known as Star, is an African-Japanese young lady. She has a dream of becoming a Japanese beauty queen in the Gardena community someday, but is battling self-doubt because of her mixed-race gene.

On the other hand, is Reverend Dalton Tucker, the religious leader of the Christian Covenant Church, who believes that the white race is superior to other races, and as such, the genes of the white race should not be contaminated by cross-breeding with other races. He regards mixed-race people as abominations against nature and is prepared to oppose any plan to increase the mixed-race population. How will Khan and his partners go about the mocha effect plan? Will Dalton be able to counter the mocha effect plan? Will the mocha effect plan impact positively or negatively on the black race? How will all these controversies affect Ahmed Reynolds? Should mixed-race individuals be allowed to choose which race they want to be identified with? Should race be the basis for determining the level of opportunities and power that an individual should have? Will there ever be equal rights in America?

I love how Hoshiko Mathews manipulates her weakness as a mixed-race person to her advantage whenever any situation she finds herself in demands it. I love how Khan was able to handle both his love life and his life as a religious leader without allowing either of them to dwindle. I love how passionate Marie Ann is about her family. I love how the author took me unawares several times by writing some events to turn out the way I would never have imagined them to. The author was so creative with the story to the extent that I was imagining casts that could play this story out in a movie when I was reading it. The book is full of emotional events that can leave one in an emotional mess.

The only thing I did not like about the book is that it has many errors. Therefore, it requires serious editing. As a result, I will have to remove one star from the rating and give the book 3 out of 4 stars.

I would recommend this book to anyone battling with low self-esteem as the contents of this book can be of immense help to the person. Anyone who also wants to be inspired might want to consider this book and learn from the life struggles and experiences of the characters.
