Review of E M P Honeymoon
After reading E M P Honeymoon: Kelly and Tom by Dorothy May Mercer, I can honestly say I have a few new concerns added to my worries list. The idea of the devastation an EMP could cause in our modern life, much less a proper solar flare certainly does keep one up at night. The story is of Kelly and Tom, newlyweds on their honeymoon who stumble across a terrorist group intent on using an EMP to cause such devastation and made for a rather thrilling ride.
On the positive side of this book, I loved the realistic premise backed up with real-world hard data. The entirely plausible premise really drove the believability of the read and allowed for much easier integration with my imagination as I read. I could visualize not only the situation mentioned in the book occurring but also the characters as they dealt with it. I also rather loved the dialog and what little of the personalities I could see in the characters. Additionally, the writing itself was coherent and well put together which made it easier to read.
Conversely what could be improved was the characters. I felt that they could have had more depth, more substance, and more personality. For example, the two agents sent from Cynthia seemed to be reflections of each other. Kelly seemed to be on one hand brave and curious and on the other intent on running away at the slightest hint of danger. Steve seemed to on one hand be an example of toxic masculinity whole suddenly flipping to become an easy-going gentleman in the next moment. Finally, Tom just didn't seem to have much to him at all. He was a cop who seemed to know spy things. In one moment the characters appear to have epic skills then the next they are taking insane risks without much planning. The biggest thing I had trouble with though was how everything just always worked out, the only blunder really was when Steve lost the tail and hit the pothole. Beyond that everything just magically worked when life always throws curveballs. I don't mind that things worked out for the best, it was the ease the characters had made that happen that bothered me.
As far as a rating, I would have to give it a 3 out of 4 stars. The reason for my rating is that the story was overall enjoyable, it was well edited, and it was entirely plausible. Keeping all of that in mind, while I do feel that it could be improved upon, I do consider it an enjoyable light read.
My recommendation for this book would be middle-aged women. This is not the sort of book that has a lot of depth, nor is it the sort of book that I feel would appeal to the young audience. While the addition of real science does add a lot to the story, I do not feel that it would appeal to a male audience, mostly due to the lack of suspense and realistic action.
