Review of The Fox
The Fox by M. N. J Butler is a historical fiction novel that talks of Leotychides, a child born from parents who are not married to each and one of the parents being born in the royal line. As an exhausted man with many years, he talks of an interesting and unpleasant story of his life beginning from the agoge through the academic system of Sparta. While reading I witnessed Leotychides making friendship, losses, betrayal and love. During that time Sparta was politically unstable due to opposition and hunger for power by Agisilaos. Leotychides made a friendship that lasted for years when he joined a flock.
This novel is wide, I had to use a lot of energy for me to read from the first page to the last. I have also been amazed by how this novel ended, it was so interesting that I could not put it down. This novel has a lot of action and plenty of events presented to us on every page of this novel. Scenes of battle were interesting and caught my attention very much. The war in this novel created an atmosphere that affected its characters in many ways as the novel stated.
The message in this novel is entertaining, I was educated and this is what I love about this novel. This novel educated me more about Sparta and besides that, I had to research other terms in this novel for me to understand the novel properly. This novel is brilliant, accurate and pleasant. I also got informed about the culture of Sparta which was presented by the vivid historical description written by the author. The citizens of Sparta had a high level of loyalty to their leaders and also amongst themselves. They were open-minded about many things including; women education, riches and currency. Due to their hard work and way of ruling, they became more prosperous compared to other neighbouring cities in Greek.
What I dislike about this novel is that my mind was overcrowded by the author's way of description and It took me too much energy to join up the story hence most of the time I found myself confused. This novel also had long sentences which were not helpful.
I will rate this novel credit of 3 out of 4 stars. The editors did a good job which is visible by how this novel is edited professionally. The grammar in this novel is okay and there is no profanity apart from one sentence which is hardly a word of profanity. The scenes of war were excellent. The reason why I gave this rating is because of the crowding of scenes and characters. I will recommend this novel to history lovers and middle-aged adults of both genders. It is also suitable for all religions.
