Beyond The Higher Ground, written by Thomas A. Brigger, is a beautiful fiction. The story revolves around Tucker Mason. The protagonist is a new member of the community in Wells County, Virginia. He is sent to Wells County by his company to oversee the construction of a prison. Tucker is struggling with a lot of personal demons. His wife died unexpectedly; he is struggling with intense grief. As well, he struggles with painful memories from his childhood. His parents were alcoholics. His brother died from suffocation because of an infection that closed his throat; his brother died because of the negligence of his parents. Tucker tries to establish relationships with the locals at Wells County. He develops an affinity for Melanie and her daughter. Tucker rents a house close to the construction site. The protagonist tries to get along with everyone; however, he soon discovers that some people don't want him in the community. His enemies come after him; they launch a series of attacks against him. They employ several tactics, including causing a road accident. Tucker is informed by officers of the Drug Enforcement Administration that the construction site is an important location in the local drug trade. Thomas creates a riveting tale about grief, guilt, redemption, sickness, drug addiction, and violence.

In this book, Thomas examines many important issues. Drug addiction is a serious problem in society. We can see this in the character named Boone. He is addicted to methamphetamine and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As well, the horrible effects of drug abuse are accurately expressed in this novel. This is seen in the character of Boone who becomes a dangerous criminal. This is also seen in Verna Lee's daughter that died from an overdose of painkillers. The intricacies of drug trafficking are explained in the novel. For example, a picture of the illegal drug trade is painted in the minds of the audience as Agent Willis explains to Mason and Casey how drugs are being trafficked in the construction site. This book is professionally edited because I observed only a small number of errors. I really liked the characters in this novel; I could easily relate to their personalities. Strong characters such as Cecil, Tuck, Melanie, Casey, Verna Lee, Boone, Cletus, and Sally made the story very enjoyable.

This book is impressive; however, I observed a flaw in it. The diction employed by the writer in the narration of this story is difficult. The writer uses many complex words throughout the text. The use of such words might make reading the book tedious for an average reader.

Beyond The Higher Ground is a thoughtful and entertaining tale that reflects relevant issues in society. In my opinion, the difficult words contained in the book are insignificant. Considering the above-stated, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to people that are bereaved, who are grieving over the death of their loved ones. Victims of drug abuse are encouraged to read this book. If your loved one is addicted to drugs, then you should read this book.
